Programme Synopsis

The ongoing crisis in West Asia has emerged as a significant geopolitical shock with the potential to disrupt global economic stability. Prolonged conflicts, disruptions to energy supply chains and shipping routes, as well as the risk of surging commodity prices, raise critical concerns regarding the resilience of open economies such as Malaysia.

This forum, jointly organised by the Malaysia Inclusive Development & Advancement Institute (MINDA), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), the Ungku Aziz Centre for Development Studies (UAC), Universiti Malaya (UM), and the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER), aims to critically assess the extent to which this crisis may intensify inflationary pressures, disrupt strategic trade flows, and test the effectiveness of Malaysia’s subsidy and fiscal policies.

More importantly, the session will address pressing policy questions: Is Malaysia prepared to shift from reactive measures to a more agile, integrated, and data-driven economic strategy? The discussion will focus on realistic policy options to strengthen energy security, enhance supply chain resilience, and reinforce fiscal capacity in the face of increasingly frequent external shocks.

Ultimately, the objective is not only to understand the implications of the crisis, but also to formulate strategic responses that enable Malaysia to act proactively, safeguard public welfare, and ensure sustainable economic growth in an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
